Hardware requirements.

We designed PocketFMS to run on a range of widely available computers and Mobile Devices. After all, no-one has the same preferences, taste and budget, but all of us would like to take to the skies as best informed as we can. The PocketFMS suite contains 2 different, yet fully compatible programs: PocketFMS Desktop and PocketFMS Mobile. With these programs, 3 distinctly different machines can be used:

PocketFMS Desktop Your desktop PC, laptop, Tablet PC or UMPC with Microsoft Windows 2000 or later,
PocketFMS Mobile Your Windows Mobile PDA or SmartPhone with Windows Mobile 2005 or later,
PocketFMS Mobile Your portable Car Navigation device with Windows CE .NET 4.2 or later.

Also available from the PocketFMS Foundation:
  AirspaceAVOID Apple iPhones & iPads
    Android devices

OCT2011: Work is in progress at this time to include a PocketFMS version for iOS and Android as well in the PocketFMS suite. These versions will become available to PocketFMS users at no extra charge.

For PocketFMS Desktop.

DesktopTo run PocketFMS Desktop, a bare minimum would be a machine with at least a 500MHz processor, 400MB of free hard disk space and 512 MB of RAM. During the software installation as well as for updating, an internet connection will be required - preferrably broadband. If you use PocketFMS Desktop in flight, an internet connection is not required - and most likely not possible either. Usually, the type of computer that PocketFMS Desktop runs on does not have an integrated GPS receiver, so you may need an external receiver.

For PocketFMS Mobile.

To run PocketFMS Mobile, a Windows Mobile or Windows CE machine is required. Generally, any Pocket PC or SmartPhone running Window Mobile 2005 or later should do. Many portable Car Navigation (CarNav) devices are capable of running PocketFMS too, as long as they are based on Windows CE .NET 4.2 or higher. This includes many well-known brands such as Mio, HP and Navigon. New Mobile Devices are introduced almost daily, so you might want to visit our forum if you need specific information. Most of these Devices have an integrated GPS receiver which PocketFMS Mobile will detect and use automatically.

A memory card is also required; PocketFMS Desktop will install PocketFMS Mobile on it along with all required data. For normal use a 2GB card will be sufficient. We strongly recommend you use a dedicated memory card exclusively for PocketFMS.

External GPS receivers.

Since most Mobile Devices have an integrated GPS receiver, you may not need a separate one. However, if you do then the GPS receiver must be able to output NMEA 0183 sentences via a serial port (COMx). Further specifications are mostly up to you, whether to go for a sleeve-, mouse- or Bluetooth type. Check the links on the left for more detailed information on desired hardware.
